Mario Guzmán Olivares

Oaxaca, México

Mario Guzmán Olivares is a graphic artist and painter who was born in Cordoba, Veracruz, but now lives and creates in Oaxaca.  He has an extensive art education from successful artists and has spent considerable time sharing his unique gift of woodcuts, linography and many forms of metal engravings with aspiring artists.  His dedication to his community is evident through his creation of a multi-artist workshop where not only graphic art is created, but also time is dedicated to teaching graphic art forms to youths in nearby villages.  A mentoring program for talented, interested young artists is the core of this workshop of several respected, well-known Oaxacan artists who work in collaboration to recall the traditions of Mexican cultures and to speak political and social truths.

Guzmán has the honor of exhibiting his work in many museums and galleries in Mexico. He also has had numerous exhibitions in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Argentina, Colombia and the U.S. Awards are numerous for Guzman’s work which focuses on cultural icons, political and social activism, and the under-represented and oppressed indigenous cultures of Mexico. Guzman is recognized for both his imagination and skill as a graphics artist as well as his mastery of printing.
