Our Mission
Galeria Caballito de Mar offers a carefully chosen fair-trade collection of art that is rooted to specific places, large and small, and to various cultures throughout Mexico. Our curation is guided by Diego Rivera's words: “The more native art is, the more it belongs to the entire world.” Our goal is to locate and support artists whose work demonstrates the passion, complexity, history and beauty of the Mexican experience.
Examples of Our Collection
Ceramics
Pottery in Mexico dates back to 1200 BC. Of all pre-Columbian crafts, pottery was accorded the highest level of esteem. This accolade has endured through the centuries to this day. Ceramics, more than any other Mexican art form, demonstrates an astonishing range of imagination rooted in the skills, ingenuity and creativity of ancestral artists.
Textiles
Oaxacan textiles date to 500 BC. Today, weavers continue to imbue their work with the voices of ancient languages. An experienced, skilled weaver can create a piece of woven art that houses the cultures, traditions and beliefs of the past while including elevated skills in thread spinning, natural dye making, imaginative designs and weaving techniques.
Graphic Art
Mexico has the oldest printmaking tradition in Latin America. Respected, well-known artists from the 20th and 21st centuries have expressed the symbiosis between graphic art and Mexican culture and politics. Today, social and political concerns as well as Mexican mythology are themes found in woodcuts, linocuts, lithography and other graphic art techniques.
