Raquel Ayala &

Demetrio Gonzalez

Capula, Michoacán, México

The workshop of Raquel Ayala Martinez and Demetrio Gonzalez is in Capula, Michoacán, a small Purepecha village, where most of the inhabitants are involved in ceramic art. The style of work produced by this family involves the use of vibrant colors with fish and floral designs. Most pieces, such as elaborate bowls, plates and casseroles, are made to be utilitarian as well as beautiful. The protective glazes are of the best quality to ensure that pieces used for cooking will be durable while retaining their beauty. Each piece is crafted by hand from clay sourced locally. In addition to harvesting and preparing their own clay, the family engages in the preparation of all paints and glazes, the making of all tools and brushes, and the construction and maintenance of their wood-fired kilns. What sets this family apart from other ceramic artists in this town is quality as well as the skillful painting of unusual designs that are extremely well executed. Like many families engaged in the ceramics in Mexico, Familia Gonzalez-Ayala have been active in this art form for several generations. As is customary, all members of the family participate in some aspect of ceramic creations.
